SACRAMENTO—The California State Legislature adopted Assembly Joint Resolution 16 today  urging President Trump and Congress to condemn the government-sanctioned persecution, torture, and murder of gay men in the Chechen Republic. More than 100 gay or suspected-gay men have been held and tortured in the region. AJR 16 is a bipartisan measure authored by Assemblymember Evan Low (D-Silicon Valley), Chair of the California Legislative LGBT Caucus, and Assemblymember Jordan Cunningham (R-Templeton).

SACRAMENTO — The California State Assembly adopted Assembly Joint Resolution 22 today condemning President Trump’s announcement that he will ban transgender individuals from serving in the military, directing the California military to not discriminate against transgender service members, and urging Defense Secretary James Mattis to allow trans service members to serve their country.

Sacramento, CA – California Legislative LGBT Caucus Chair Assemblymember Evan Low (D-Silicon Valley) and Vice Chair Senator Ricardo Lara (Bell Gardens) commented on the one year anniversary of the Pulse Nightclub shooting. It was the deadliest mass shooting in the U.S. and the deadliest attack on the LGBT community in American history.

SACRAMENTO—The California Legislative LGBT Caucus issued the following statement on reports of forced disappearances, torture and murder of LGBT individuals in Chechnya.

“We are deeply disturbed by the reports of abuse, kidnapping and murder of LGBT people living in Chechnya. This brutality, coupled with Chechen officials’ callous disregard for LGBT lives, is horrifying. We urge Russian authorities to condemn the violence, launch an investigation and hold the perpetrators accountable for their crimes.”
